My Review Scale
For the movie reviews I do on this blog, I use a 10-point grading scale similar to the old Electronic Gaming Monthly/1up.com review scale (they use a letter-based scale now). The scale starts at 0 (the lowest) and moves to 10 (the highest) in 1/2 point increments.
It is also worth mentioning that the genre of the movie should also be taken into account. For example, if I give a drama a ‘7′ and a comedy an ‘8′, that doesn’t necessarily mean the comedy movie is better than the drama. Movies should be compared to other movies within their own genres, as that seems to be the most fair approach.
0-1.5 = One of the worst I’ve ever seen. Not even the trailers are worth watching.
2-3.0 = Terrible. Don’t spend money on this. If you see this on cable, then maybe, just maybe, if you have absolutely nothing else to do, you could watch this.
3.5-4.5 = So bad it’s funny. Probably a decent movie to watch just to make fun of.
5.0-6.0 = Average, possibly a rental, but don’t waste your money at the theatre for this.
6.5-7.5 = Worthy of a rental, unless you’re a fan of the actor, the director, or the series this movie may be a part of. In that case, spending $10 on a movie ticket might be OK.
8.0-9.0 = Great. This one’s worthy of the price of a movie ticket. It may have some flaws, but most people would enjoy this.
9.5-10 = An absolute must-see masterpiece. This doesn’t mean it’s flawless, but among the absolute best within it’s genre, and possibly among the best of all time. Not only is this worth you ticket money, it might be worthy of it multiple times. This is one you will also need to own on home video.
