Well, no, they can’t. But they according to the Associated Press, you’d think they were. In March, sales jumped 57% due to the strong debut of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the continuing performance of the Wii and DS systems. Sales are estimated to be around 1.7 billion, with 2.7 million units (!) of Brawl, 721,00 Wii’s, and 698,000 DS’s sold. Sony’s PSP came at a respectable 3rd in the hardware race, with 297,000 units sold.
There was also an increase in games accessories, up 58% from last year. April is looking to be another great month for the industry, with Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV (360, PS3) and Nintendo’s Mario Kart (Wii) launching near the end of this month.
With such strong growth in the games industry, one wonders if other non-gaming companies could even hope to have as much success.
