Review Catch-Up: “The Wolfman”

If you want to see actors phone in their lines, go check out Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman.  While not the worst movie ever made, it certainly isn’t that good, and barely passes as something I’d recommend even renting.

Benicio Del Toro plays the title character, a man who’s searching for whatever killed his brother.  His dad, Anthony Hopkins, has shown little interest in actually finding the killer.  Emily Blunt, who plays the love interest, is more concerned about Del Toro’s safety than the identity of the killer.  Acting-wise, this movie is a mess.  Del Toro looks absolutely bored and lifeless as The Wolfman, while Emily Blunt is given absolutely nothing to do throughout.  Anthony Hopkins, on the other hand, looks like he’s at least having fun playing this crazy old kook.  He probably knows how bad this movie is, and is probably trying to make the best of it.

On the visual effects front, it’s not too bad.  The landscapes, especially that of turn-of-the-century England, look very CG, but the make-up on the Wolfman is pretty good.  The blood (and there’s gallons of it) looks kinda fake, though.

The Wolfman is yet another mediocre movie to add to director Joe Johnston’s resume of mediocre movies.  I am a little worried now for his next project, The First Avenger: Captain America, which is supposed to be the lead in for the Marvel/Universal uber-team-up movie The Avengers.  As for this flick, I’d say skip it, unless you really like your creature movies.
